Kansas City International Airport Has Busiest September Ever
The Kansas City Aviation Department reports that 1,001,300 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in September 2024, a 1.0-percent increase from September 2023. It is the first-ever September to exceed one million passengers served.
Passenger boardings were up 0.4 percent, with 496,830 boarded. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 4,552,848, up 6.1 percent. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 9,129,610, up 6.1 percent.
“Our Kansas City International Airport continues to receive overwhelming positive feedback and I am thrilled we continue to break passenger records,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas. “A busy and active KCI means more jobs and continued local economic growth long-term. I look forward to continuing our work with airlines around the world to further expand service out of Kansas City.”

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at Kansas City International were up 13.4 percent in September with a total of 21.8 million pounds handled. Year to date, 198.4 million pounds of air cargo has been handled, up 13.3 percent. Air freight handled at Kansas City International during September amounted to 19.7 million pounds, up 2.5 percent year-over-year. Year to date, air freight is up 12.3 percent with 192.1 million pounds handled. Air mail for September was up 16,257 percent from September 2023 with 2.1 million pounds handled. Air mail year to date for 2024 is up 56.2 percent from 2023 with 6.4 million pounds handled.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for September 2024 was 171. Service was offered to 50 nonstop markets. There was an average of 43,113 arriving and departing scheduled seats in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 10 daily departures for September.
